Mark S. S Baker
Mark Baker was born in 1956 in Sydney, Australia, completed his PhD in 1985 at Macquarie University where his research focused on the biochemistry of proteins in human health and disease (e.g., arthritis, breast, ovarian, prostate and colorectal cancer). Mark has made substantial contributions to the growth of proteomics societies at the national, regional and global levels (APS, AO-HUPO and international HUPO) from their earliest beginnings. In 2004, he co-founded the Australasian Proteomics Society, was an AO-HUPO Councillor from inception and was one of the foundation members of HUPO. Mark served as CEO/Director of Australia’s national proteomics facility (APAF) from 2003-9 and secured government support for a large expansion of national “omics” services during that time. Mark was elected onto the HUPO Board in 2005, has served continuously ever since and was elected member-at-large onto the HUPO Executive in 2012. In 2010, Mark was Congress Chair of the 9th HUPO World Congress in Sydney where the global Human Proteome Project was officially launched and is a member of numerous prominent HUPO initiatives and committees, prestigious proteomics journals and various Advisory Boards. Mark was recognised internationally in 2012 for his research and service efforts through the HUPO Distinguished Service Award and was recently elected to be the upcoming HUPO President. Mark has published 130 peer-reviewed papers, supervised more than 32 PhD graduates and is the inventor of a number of proteomics technology patents. He is a strong advocate for industry:University collaborations and the promotion of career paths for young researchers.
